A moment after this photo was taken, my legs sunk farther into the sand and my body catapulted forward; a full face plant into the dunes.
I felt like a little kid again, falling while playing. I experienced exhilaration while I hoisted myself up, shaking off the layer of sand I was coated in, like a cinnamon sugar donut, and began looking for my shoe, which has been sucked into the sand when I toppled. Laughing and breathing heavy, the search for my shoe ended with acceptance that the dunes had eaten it, and some windstorm in the future would reveal it, maybe as an ancient relic years in the future.
Oh what fun it was to just have this childlike experience. Adults don’t fall and lose their shoes and have pockets filled with sand. But they totally should.
